The good point about being on
your own is you are free- to decide what to eat, what to wear, how to spend
your time, the list is endless. This freedom handled well can make you
independent, responsible and efficient. You have to now make all the decisions,
from the laundry, to cleaning the dishes and keeping a house to paying your
bills. Handling all your chores makes you independent and the added
responsibility makes you confident.
According
to psychological studies, an interesting fallout of living on your own, is that
you feel less angry just because you have no one to fight with, no one to make
demands on you, and no one to tell you what to do. But this is not always
positive. There is no one to guide you when you are alone. Every decision
whether small or big is now yours, and you cannot pass the blame when things go
wrong.

Challenges
However, there are disadvantages in being on your own. The first is, if you have relocated for work, then, finding a place to live. College students have to look for a place if there is no hostel accommodation. Suitable places, safe, well located and comfortable are very few and short of a miracle, difficult to find.
Some cities are not very welcoming to strangers. Landlords don’t like renting out to singles as a rule, so unless you have connections, be it friends or relatives, finding a place is a struggle. Unless you are lucky to have landed a very well paying job or your dad is still picking up the tabs, you have to manage on a limited budget. Often the rents are prohibitive and if you do manage to find a place within your budget, then other factors may not be conducive, it may be far from your work area, or it may lack amenities which at home you take for granted. Paying guest accommodations may not give you any freedom and you do need to adjust to outlandish requests from landlords.
Moreover, managing finances is a big challenge for first time home leavers. You have to manage all communication costs, calling up long distances, and cost of travel. The only helping hand is your own.
Safety
But that is only a part of the story. Families back home are constantly worried about the safety of their children. And young people worry about the families. This gnawing fear is magnified especially during natural calamities and wild news reports of crimes committed. Everything is amplified for parents back home. Apart from this, at home you are a part of a joint security system and a safety blanket. You lose this benefit when you are on your own unless you have a good network and friends circle.
Making friends
New cities may be forbidding if you don’t know the local language. You will need to create new social networks, probably learn the language and adjust to the culture. This is often traumatic if the change from the home town is stark. But then a positive consequence is that you become socially active in order to compensate for the lack of your family. You need the resilience to avoid falling into the trap of the two most common maladies- depression and loneliness. Even if you are lucky enough to share a house with a friend adjusting to another way of life can be difficult.
